Summer is here, and it is unusally hot and dry… no rain for weeks, the water is low and warm in many places. Some famous salmon rivers, as the Norwegian Gaula, have closed their fishery (for good reason!). \"\"<\/a>Our region is lucky to have large natural water reservoirs in the jurassic limestone, so that cool water always flows underground into the creeks and rivers, keeping the water temperature low. Most of them still have temperatures of around 18\u00b0C, which is more than usual, but still perfectly fine for the fish.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The water is clear though, and the trouts are in their usual summer-mode: cautious, well-fed and hidden below some overhanging brush oder behind a big rock on the riverbed. This is the time when I change flies often according to the situation. Beetles and caterpillars below trees and bushes, inconspicuous nymphs with little to no flash for the deep pools, and even streamers for the long runs and deep eddies. I sometimes even carry two rods, a 3wt or 5wt for dries and nymphs, and a 6wt for streamers.<\/p>\n

And with some patience involved, nice fish can be caught, as e.g. several 40+cm browns I caught this weekend.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless – although our waters are still fishable, nature does need rain! Urgently!<\/p>\n
