During summer I sometimes struggle to tell to which of the many different insects the fish are currently rising. A pattern that ALWAYS works is this pattern created by Christian Kuchelmeister. This fly has caught a large variety of fish in difficult situations, from Slovenian grayling to Swiss brook trout in the mountains to massive browns and bows in my local creeks. Larger variantions of this pattern can even be fished as a mayfly imitation.

Materials:

  • Hook: dryfly hook #12-#16 (e.g. Dohiku 301)
  • Thread: Unithread 6/0 or 8/0, depending on hook size
  • Body: CDC tan or brown
  • Tail: Coq de Leon
  • Wing: Deer hair
  • Hackle: CDC tan or brown
