Yes, it is possible to specifically fish for grayling in a trout river. Graylings love bright colors, especially red, orange or pink.

The color of the bead in a nymph can make a significant difference from catching mostly trout to mostly grayling… when I went fishing recently, I decided to use a copperhead nymph and although there was still an occasional brown taking the fly, I caught mostly grayling. In the end, the numbers were something like 1:5 in favor of the graylings, but had I fished with a goldhead nymph, it would have been the other way around.

Here are some pictures of my latest trip to the water. The graylings were between 10 and 45cm long, all took a simple haresear nymph with a copper head. An especially nice colored brown also took the nymph, it was remarkably colorful for this specific stream – I have seldom seen such beautiful spots.
